Equinor's new CEO appointment: another milestone in energy transition

On August 10th, Equinor has appointed Anders Opedal as its new CEO, effective November 02, 2020. Equinor (ex-Statoil) is one of the world’s leading hydrocarbon producers, which has been aggressively reshaping its energy portfolio to incorporate a higher weight of renewable energy (wind, solar…).

Anders joined Equinor as a petroleum engineer in 1997, having recently served as executive vice president for technology in the company’s projects and drilling division. He has engineering and operational experience in both fossil-fuels and renewables projects. He was the project leader for the Sheringham Shoal and Hywind Tampen offshore wind farms, and the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage project.

Equinor’s New Energy Solutions unit, which works in offshore wind, carbon capture and storage and other low-carbon alternatives, will represent 15-20% of  Equinor’s annual Capex (capital expenditure) by 2030, likely to place Equinor as a lead spender on renewables among oil and gas companies, over the next few years.

It just shows how fast the hydrocarbon energy industry is changing, and how, overall, it is aligning with Paris agreement commitments, which target a 40% reduction in green house gas output between 1990 and 2030 (scientists say atmospheric CO2 must be cut from 385 ppm to 350 ppm).

New leadership with proper industry background helps changing the scope and scale of investments to expedite its energy portfolio mix. In parallel, helps to lead the harmonization in a company with a new mix of employees, with different background, different culture, different compensation packages etc, such as those from the fossil and renewable industries.

The world needs to become greener, and we have witnessed an important example taken by a major international energy company.
